AFGRI Invites Suitably Qualified Matriculants to Apply for Their Tractor & Earthmoving Mechanic Apprenticeship. The closing date for applications is 08 August 2025.
If you’ve just finished school and you’re not sure what’s next, here’s a golden opportunity you don’t want to miss. AFGRI, one of South Africa’s most respected agricultural companies, is offering a 3-year apprenticeship programme for driven matriculants who are eager to build a strong and stable career in mechanics. Whether you’re dreaming of working with tractors or heavy machinery, this is your chance to earn while you learn — and it won’t cost you a cent (as long as you pass).
This apprenticeship is only open to young people who have completed matric. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the right qualifications yet — AFGRI even offers support to help you get there. But be quick — this opportunity is limited, and the closing date is 8 August 2025.
What This Apprenticeship Is About
This is a hands-on training programme that lasts for three years. The aim? To train you to become a qualified Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic. For the first six months, you’ll be on probation. This means both you and AFGRI get to see if the partnership is a good fit. After that, if everything goes well, you’ll sign a contract and begin full training.
The training includes:
- Practical learning at a specialized training institute
- Distance learning (some subjects might be studied at home)
- College classes on weekends (especially Saturdays)
- Product-specific training from brands like John Deere
- Internal training by experts in the field
This might sound intense, but it’s a solid path to a respected and reliable career. You’ll gain real-world experience, work with top-tier machines, and learn from the best in the business.

What You’ll Be Doing
As an apprentice, you won’t just be sitting in a classroom. Your day-to-day duties will include:
- Learning how to fix and maintain tractors and heavy machinery
- Helping with stock control
- Providing good service to customers
- Doing general tasks in the workshop
By the time you finish the apprenticeship, you’ll be trained to work on your own, ready for a career in mechanics.

To be considered, you must meet some basic requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
- Matric certificate OR N2 certificate with these subjects:
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- Plus one of: Technical Drawing, Industrial Electronics, or Motor Trade Theory
If you don’t yet have the N2, don’t worry. If you passed certain subjects in Matric like:

- A serious attitude toward learning
- Motivation to grow
- Ability to work with others

Important Things to Know About the Contract
This apprenticeship is a serious commitment. Once you pass the probation period, you’ll be signed to a 3-year contract. If you quit before the time is up, you might have to pay back some of the training costs — depending on when you leave.
Once you qualify, you’re expected to work back the time the company invested in you. You have a total of four years to complete the program — no more.
Application Tips
Set aside at least 60 minutes to complete the online application. You’ll also need about 30 minutes for the screening and assessment section. Be honest and take your time.
You must be ready for interviews and assessments as part of the selection process. If you haven’t heard back within 30 days after the closing date, it means your application wasn’t successful.
AFGRI supports fair hiring and follows Employment Equity laws, so they encourage all suitable candidates to apply.
Why You Should Apply
This is more than just a job — it’s a career path. With proper training, a clear goal, and support along the way, you could become a skilled mechanic in just a few years. You’ll earn a salary, get practical experience, and build a future without having to pay for training (as long as you pass). If you love working with your hands and have a passion for fixing machines, don’t let this opportunity slip away.
